Food loss and waste: A sustainability conundrum with nationally focused solutions

19 May 2022

Food waste is a $1.6 trillion global problem. With Australia committed to halving its food waste by 2030, this session will explore how the Fight Food Waste Cooperative Research Centre, along with its sister organisation Stop Food Waste Australia, is working with industry, government and research partners to reduce food waste from farm to fork. Of particular focus will be how the CRC’s REDUCE program is delivering impact for the Australian packaging industry through its research in areas such as date labelling, resealability and shelf life. Join this session to hear about:

  • Food waste is a massive global problem, contributing an estimated 8% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. In Australia, 7.6m tonnes of food is wasted annually – the equivalent of filling 10 MCGs
  • The Fight Food Waste CRC is working with some 70 industry, government and research partners as it strives to help meet Australia’s commitment to halving its food waste by 2030
  • The CRC’s REDUCE program is working with industry and organisations such as APPMA to decrease food waste nationally across areas including packaging and process machinery technologies, hospitality and food service, and the cold food chain
